Tourism Training Australia

Apply Now

Our tourism training program is aimed at those interested in gaining experience in Australia’s booming tourism industry. We work with tourism organisations across the country, including hostels, travel agents, and campgrounds, to offer participants a unique range of experiences. You could be learning about anything from guest services and travel sales to general operations and kitchen service. We’ll organise the practical details – such as shared accommodation with other trainees and a meal allowance – so you can focus on having a great time.

Our program takes place at over 50 host organisations across Australia, including in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, the Gold Coast, and Great Barrier Reef – so wherever you end up, you’re sure to see an interesting part of the country!

If you’re keen to experience Australia while adding real-world tourism experience to your CV, this 12+ week program is the one for you.

Location and duration

We make placements in all the states of Australia, with the majority in New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria. Placements last at least 12 weeks and can be extended in agreement with your manager before the end of your placement.

Work hours, time off, and travel

In most of our placements, you’ll be training for four days per week (32 hours per week). This gives you three days off per week to explore your local city or town. (Alternatively, some trainees like to pick up part-time jobs during their days off.)

This means some local travel may be possible during your work period, but there will not be a chance for an extended holiday partway through. For this reason, we recommend you allow some time before or after your placement to see the country. We work with several backpacker travel companies who can show you the best of Australia as well as New Zealand, Southeast Asia, and Fiji. If you’re interested in a spot of extra travel around your placement, let us know and we’ll advise you about travel options before you book your flights.

Accommodation, meals, and wifi

Accommodation is included in your placement: you’ll share a dorm room on the property with other staff, interns, and trainees. All kitchen and bathroom facilities are shared with other trainees.

You’ll also be given a meal allowance of up to AU$70 per week, so you can purchase your own food. Some meals and drinks may be provided for free or at discounted rates in the hostel restaurant or bar.

Free wifi is included for trainees at most hostels.

How is my tourism training placement selected?2022-04-04T12:45:11+12:00

We carefully select your placement based on factors such as your individual background and experience, your level of English and your visa status.

After you apply for the program you will have a consultation/interview with one of our Placement Supervisors. Once you are accepted in the program we commence our search for a suitable local organisation for you. You will then have an interview with your potential host organisation, which our Placement Supervisor will organise.

Once we’ve found the perfect organisation for you, we’ll send you a placement agreement outlining some key information about your placement, such as your tasks and responsibilities, start and end dates and accommodation options.

“My time in Australia so far has been amazing! The placement and everyone have been so friendly so I can’t complain at all. I’m still here in Airlie and now working as a receptionist. I’m very happy for all the experience and everything I got from this place”
