If you Opted for a Local Bank Account – ANZ, BNZ, Kiwi Bank

By now you should have already received a bank appointment or will have been told to drop in when you land in Auckland. Please go to the bank for your appointment or drop in as soon as you have the opportunity. To verify your bank account you will need to have;

  • Your passport
  • Your work visa
  • A Proof of Address in your home country. This must be something that has been posted to you from a bank, a government department, utility or phone company for example. It must clearly show your name and your physical home residential address.
  • Tax Identification Number TIN in your home country (e.g Social Security Number, Personal Number, PersonNummer, Social Insurance Number, Steueridentifikationsnummer, Burgerservicenummer, National Number, Skatteetaten, CPR or equivalent in your country
  • A small amount of New Zealand Dollars to deposit into your account

Take $30NZD or more and deposit it into the account. When you have your debit card take $20 out from the machine. This shows that you are in New Zealand. Then go to the bank teller and let them know you need a statement to show you have made a deposit and withdrawal and keep this statement. You need this statement to apply for your IRD number. If you do not get a debit card ask the bank teller for a stamped statement to say your account is open. You can use this statement to apply for your IRD number.

If you opted for a Wise account

By now you should already set up a New Zealand Account inside your Wise Account. You should see a New Zealand Dollar with a New Zealand Flag. You should have also transferred some money from your home currency to the New Zealand account.

If you havent yet opened a Wise account you can do now using this link

As soon as possible make a purchase with your Wise Card.  You need to show this transaction occurring in New Zealand to apply for your IRD number. Once you have done this you need to download a statement from your New Zealand Wise Account showing 2 transactions (one occurring in New Zealand). Take a screenshot as you will need to upload this in your IRD application.
